CHAPTER 9

ALEC

Today’s been a blast. Rounding up and steering cattle got my blood pumping. It feels like a bonus that I had such good fun while hanging out with my brother, Patrick, and Yarran.

While I haven't been able to as much lately with my new position, I normally spend a lot of time outdoors for my job. Out on the property, it's different, though. Under the bright sun with no sign of a cloud in the sky, the space around me felt limitless.

“The skies are so big here.”

My brother looks at me like I’ve had too many beers, but Patrick’s bobbing his head. “I hear you. It feels that way, especially when the blue isn’t smudged by white clouds. It feels like you can see the curvature of the world.”

“Yes, that.” I point at him, happy he gets it.

“You should see it at night,” Yarran adds. “The vastness is incredible.”

I nod. “Yeah, last night before bed, I noticed how many stars were visible.”

Yarran shakes his head while I’m talking. “Nah, mate. You need to keep heading out west. There’s an observatory out in Charleville, but there’s a couple of great local spots, perfect for taking a swag and soaking in the cosmos.” He sips at his beer, still focussed on me. He turns his attention to Patrick. “You should take Alec out there for the night.”

My heart stutters in my chest, liking the sound of that a hell of a lot. “That would be awesome. Do we have time for that?” My gaze moves to Patrick. Openly staring at me, he doesn’t glance away when our eyes connect. “How far is it?”

He swallows before saying, “Just under three hours. That something you’d like to do?”

I’m already nodding enthusiastically. “Heck yes. You got a spare swag?”

“Dad’s got one you can use.”

I grin. It’s been years since I camped out under the stars. These days any semblance of camping I do is on school trips.

“Usually I’d question whether I was invisible,” Trev says with absolutely zero bite, “but if you guys want to camp out, have at it. I’ll gladly kick back with Graham and a few beers.”

I sit a little higher on my stool, eager to spend some time with Patrick, and under the stars to boot. That’s romantic as fuck, right? Almost date territory, surely. “Excellent, thanks, Trev.” Looking over at Patrick, I can’t hold back my excited grin. “So when are we going to do this? When do we have time around what needs to be done?”

He rubs the back of his neck, clearly thinking. “This coming weekend is Easter, so we have the events in town. You want to go, yeah?”

“Yeah, definitely.”

“Perhaps this Thursday, before the tourists swarm the place on Good Friday.”

“Will that give us enough time to work the cows?”

Patrick’s lips twitch. “Work the cows, huh?” I roll my eyes, and he continues, “Should be fine to finish up by Thursday midday. We’ll start Tuesday morning getting the cows vaccinated and sprayed. There’s some bull calves that need banding too, and some need tagging.
